Program Description
Preparatory Training in China (August 2009)
You receive intensive training in Beijing during August 2009 in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and in Chinese language (4 levels; the beginning course requires no prior study of Chinese). The training is at Peking University, China's premier university, and includes housing and tours of the Great Wall and the Imperial Palace. The training is specifically geared to equip you with the skills to be a successful teacher in Shenzhen. You will earn the well-recognized "TEFL in China Certificate." Then the group travels by train from Beijing to Shenzhen for three additional days of orientation provided by the Shenzhen Education Bureau, including housing and meals.

Classroom
Teaching in Shenzhen (Sept. 2009 - June 15, 2010)
You will teach English speaking and listening, 12 hours (15 classes, 45-minutes each) per week, Monday through Friday, in a Shenzhen public junior/senior high school or elementary school where you will be a faculty member, September 2009 to June 15, 2010. One or two teachers are assigned to each school. Usually your apartment will be at the school, and you will have a desk in an office shared with other teachers.
Your classes focus exclusively on speaking. All the students are also taking English classes with their Chinese teachers who teach grammar, reading, and writing. You meet with each group of students usually once a week, so you will only have to prepare a few lesson plans each week. Classes in China usually are large (45-60), so the teaching is demanding, but rewarding.
You may be asked to work with the Chinese teachers on their English language or to increase their knowledge of Western culture. You may also be expected to help with student extra-curricular activities, such as an English-language newspaper, sports, or a show. Teachers are expected to be active in school programs and to talk with the students outside class hours. You will be at your school most of the day, Monday through Friday, except for the two afternoons a week when you will meet with other people in the program for your Chinese class.

Continuing Support in Shenzhen
Your school will provide a bi-lingual faculty member to assist you with the details of daily life, and the program has four experienced American On-Site Coordinators resident in Shenzhen.

Chinese language courses in Shenzhen
Your study of Mandarin Chinese continues in Shenzhen in the autumn, and optionally the following spring. Shenzhen is a Mandarin-speaking city, well suited for Chinese language study.
