The Experience

The Center for Teaching and Learning in China is a USA-based organization that recruits, interviews, trains and supports teachers for work in Shenzhen, China. It has collaborated with the metropolitan Shenzhen Education Bureau to recruit teachers of English in the Shenzhen public schools continuously since 1997. The Center is officially approved by the Chinese government for recruiting (State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs certificate no. 51). The Center directors are members of NAFSA Association of International Educators and the Chinese Language Teachers Association. The Center for Teaching & Learning in China, LLC / U.S. TEFL Training Center, Inc. (non-profit) are registered in Tennessee, USA.

The Shenzhen Program began in February 1998 with a pioneering group of 13 teachers as a work/study semester abroad of the University of Memphis. It soon expanded to 50 teachers and an On-Site Coordinator. The August training courses were instituted in 2000 and have been supported by a grant from the Shenzhen Education Bureau since 2001. University participation ended in 2002 as the emphasis shifted exclusively to participants who already have completed a college degree. The program has grown to 170 teachers for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The Shenzhen Program has been continuously under the direction of the founding Co-Directors, Dr. De-an Wu Swihart and Dr. William H. O'Donnell. Dr. Swihart has a Ph.D. from Princeton in classical Chinese language and literature, and has taught Chinese in the USA for many years. Dr. O'Donnell has a Ph.D. also from Princeton in English and taught at Penn State and the University of Memphis, where he was Chairman of the English Department.
